Tip Sheet

Disney's 'Oliver & Company' featuring streetwise dogs with attitude, in a New York setting and how they help an orphaned kitten find a home. Superb visuals and songs. Great opening song by Billy Joel. Classic Disney!

Miyazaki Hirao's "Tonari no Totoro" (My Neighbour Totoro). Miyazaki is a fine animation artist with an eye for detail, and whoever wrote the English language version has a very good ear for children's conversation. The story set in rural Japan.

Finding Nemo, because it's really more than just an animated feature. It's about family, about father and son, about belief and faith, about friendship, about love, and above all, it depicts warm-blooded humanity in something as cold as fish!

Ice Age 1! I love the unlikely combination of the trio and how Diego the sabre-tooth tiger became their ally. Lots of love, friendship and adventure elements in this show.

Madagascar - the first part in New York is good, but it gets even better once they reach Madagascar, and it's very funny, not to mention really well done, of course.

Miyazaki's My Neighbour Totoro is definitely the finest. He creates a world all can enjoy, adult and child alike. His Spirited Away is almost as good but Tororo - in the original Japanese, please, is top.

The Secret of NIMH. I always loved that movie because it has cute animals, jewels, and a great message: Believe in yourself because you have the power within you to do anything.
