Tip Sheet

The green beans is a good idea, but not for a total diet, just as a filler. Feed a quality protein base diet and bulk it up with canned green beans. You can buy giant commercial sized cans at Sam's Club. One to two cups per meal for 50 lb dog.

Exercise! See the Dog Whisperer about how to put dogs on treadmills, if you can't/won't walk them more yourself. Make sure their nails are properly trimmed. (I use Peticure.) If a dog's nails are too long they can't walk or run much without pain.

Free feeding, as opposed to set meal times, is one way to stop your dog becoming overweight. Dogs will only eat what they need, whereas set feeding times encourages overeating and food hoarding, leading to putting on weight.

We had a very overweight dog and our vet told us to only feed her green beans. We have been during that for over month now and she has just about got down to her normal weight.
