Tip Sheet

YOU CAN'T DRAW? I DISAGREE! You likely grew up on PHOTOS. How stop comparing your art with them. Draw ANY way you can! Don't overcorrect! A "signature style" will inevitably show up in everyone's art. No two alike. We want to see YOURS!

NO TIME TO DRAW? Draw ANYWAY! Put sketchpad on lap while watching TV. Blast out quick sketches of moving images. Forget detail. Do LOTS of them. No agonizing or judging. Save & compare weeks or months later. Draw even with TV & pedaling exercise bike!

Drawing is one of the most relaxing, enjoyable things you can do. It costs nothing, you get lost in it, and lose track of time. Start by trying to sketch over a photo, then try copying a photo by sight. Next,go to a park, choose a tree to draw.

Learn to draw (copy a drawing) fooling the control-freak-left-side-brain by placing the original upside down. Listen to music and begin to copy. Because itl is upside down 'lefty' wount know what the drawing is, and thus allow 'righty-brain' some fun

Close your eyes in a dimly lit room and watch the patterns or colors or shapes that appear after a few moments. Open your eyes and draw, write or speak about what you saw in as much detail as you can.

Work in a new medium - if you paint, work with pencils - if you sketch, work with paint - and see what you create.

Most of us are aware we have two sides to our brain. The logical, and the creative\emotional. Many people are afraid to do something creative. You need to forget about doing something great, and just do something. Judgement is un-necessary!

Scribble, a lot. Just let your hand fly! Play with the most interesting scribbles and uncover what's hidden in the dots, slashes and lines. You may even want to cut the best scribbles out and file them away for future development. Try it!

Never say to yourself, "I can't do this." But rather just set out doing it! Your worst enemy is your inner judge. That part of you that is constantly saying you're not good enough. Just make a choice to stop being so down on yourself. Then go for it!

Take the concept of left and right hand brain further; actually draw using your opposite hand, The results can be amazing as you concentrate on what you are looking at and stop worrying about how it will look; you know it will look crappy!

Try things you've never tried before instead of giving up on the idea of being artistic. Example: Can't draw? Try sculpting. Some people who struggle to depict something in two dimensions can work well in three dimensions.

If we want to draw a flower we call on our brain's computerised image of a flower and use that. Draw with the opposite hand, add colour and see results like these

If you're a writer and journal, draw in your private journal to find your style of drawing while you write. Have fun, make your characters come alive and have conversations. Drawing may add to your creative writing style in developing characters.
