The US Geological Survey predicts that California has 99.7% chance of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake (as Northridge) in the next 30 years. San Andreas Fault and Hayward Fault are the most likely sources in Southern and Northern California, respectively.

The 2011 Japan Earthquake is a wake-up call for Californians to be aware of active fault lines shown on USGS maps and setup a preparedness plan including a tsunami alert device for those who live near the coast.
