It's definitely worth the time to validate sites at Yahoo/Alexa/Bing to reduce your dependency on Google for traffic. Bing & Yahoo take 4+ weeks to assign rank to your pages and collect backlink info, so do this right away with new sites.

I've had great success with hyphenated 2 to 3 keyword-loaded domain names like http://www.mac-seo-tools.com/ for clarity. Very few people manually TYPE domains these days anyways. Hyphens make it easier to get the domain variant you want sometimes.

Agreed. Overly agressive link-building can hurt you for months on end - even if all other aspects of your site are honest. If you are punished; let it HEAL over time rather than try to FIX it. Focus your energies on a new site or blog in the interim.

Forums Good or Bad?

If you look at page 1 & 2 of Google SERPS you'll see FORUMS dominating results. Blog all you want till you're blue in the face but a meaningful post, a good signature in a forum is a great traffic driver. Clearly Goog sees forums as top Authority sites.
