Drywall sheets are FINISH material, and they are fragile. Handle with care. Don't bang corners, make accurate cuts, don't force it into place. Use drywall screws, set the heads about 1/16". Use a sharp knife to cut, avoid burred cuts. Trim bad cuts.

With a hole of more than an inch or so, you will need some kind of backing for your repair to stick to. With wood lath behind, you can just fill the hole with quick set joint compound, or qlue a piece of thin drywall into place, then fill around the edges
